Slow WordPress site? 6 causes and how to fix them

Quick answer

A slow WordPress site is usually caused by large images, too many plugins, cheap hosting, no caching, heavy page builders and unused scripts. Fixing images and caching alone often halves load time.

Speed is money. Visitors leave pages that take too long to load, and Google uses page experience when ranking. The good news: a slow WordPress site usually has the same few causes, and most are fixable without a rebuild.

Six causes of a slow WordPress site

1. Oversized images

Photos uploaded straight from a camera or phone can be several megabytes each. Resize them, convert them to WebP, and let images below the screen load later.

2. Too many plugins

Each plugin can add scripts and database work to every page. Remove plugins you do not use, and replace several small ones with one that does the job.

3. Slow hosting

Very cheap shared hosting puts hundreds of sites on one server. If the server takes over a second to answer, nothing else you fix will make the site fast.

4. No page caching or CDN

Without caching, WordPress builds every page from scratch for every visitor. A caching plugin and a CDN serve ready-made pages from close to the visitor.

5. Heavy page builders

Page builders are convenient but can load every feature on every page. Turn off the features you do not use and keep layouts simple.

6. Fonts and third-party scripts

Chat widgets, trackers and several font families can block the page from showing. Load only what each page needs.

How to check your site

Run Google’s PageSpeed Insights on your homepage and a key page. Focus on the mobile score and the three Core Web Vitals: Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds, and Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1.
